The “Malibu Farm Cookbook”--by author Helene Henderson--Take a delicious and delightfully diverse culinary tour of the California Coast through the pages!

Malibu Farm Cookbook: Recipes from the California Coast

by

Situated at the end of the pier, Malibu Farm is a restaurant beloved for its spectacular Pacific Ocean views, the freshly sourced ingredients on its ever-changing menu, and its warm vibe. Chef-owner Helene Henderson opened the space after the once-intimate dinners she hosted on the grounds of her home grew too large. Now, in Malibu Farm Cookbook, she invites you celebrate the coast and mountains of Southern California with dishes like Ricotta and Pea Frittata, Butterfly Beef Tenderloin with Horseradish, Seared Fava Beans, and Grilled Chocolate Cake with Caramel Sauce. Helene captures the spirit of her own farm with recipes using the morning’s fresh eggs, the catch of the day, the luscious vegetables that grow all around, honey harvested steps from where it’s enjoyed, and olive oil straight from her grove.  Punctuated with luscious, vibrant photography, Malibu Farm Cookbook is a stunning sensory experience that transports you right to the edge of the Pacific.

MY REVIEW:  Take a delicious and delightfully diverse culinary tour of the California Coast through the “Malibu Farm Cookbook”. Named after the popular restaurant owned and operated by author Helene Henderson, this cookbook is also a memoir and celebration of the author’s lifestyle and food philosophy. The restaurant, perched on the very end of a pier, came about through a culmination of catering, teaching cooking classes, cooking for the wealthy, blogging, fund-raising, and farming. Ms. Henderson blends her Swedish heritage, her natural instincts for food and cooking, and the unique culture and environment of Malibu into an inviting and enticing feast for foodies. Organic, locally grown and harvested ingredients are part of the “eat the real thing, or don’t eat it at all” motto which pervades the pages of this big, colorful cookbook. The photography, by Martin Lof, is deep-toned and earthy, bringing you closer to the small, unimaginably rich town of Malibu. Here are some of the sumptuous recipes you’ll find: “Frittata with Ricotta and Peas”; “Swedish Mini-Pancakes with Cream and Berries”; “Baby Potatoes + Green Beans”; “Orzo with Peppers, Tomatoes, and Olives”; “Honey Lemon Saffron Chicken”; “Twice-Baked Yogurt Potatoes”; “Grilled Butterfly Beef Tenderloin with Horseradish”; “Parsnip-Potato Latkes”; “Salmon + Grainy Mustard Dressing”; “Grilled Smashed Potatoes + Roasted Garlic and Parmesan; “Salted Caramel Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches”; and “Grilled Chocolate Cake with Caramel Sauce”. Helene Henderson was born in Sweden; and that is where she learned to cook. She followed her dreams to America, and in 1997, she started Lavender Farms Catering in LA, specializing in organic food. Malibu Farm began in her backyard by teaching cooking and catering farm dinners. Now, she is the chef-owner of Malibu Farm Pier Cafe and Restaurant, which use her own produce and that of other local farmers. She lives there with her husband, screenwriter and director John Stockwell, and their three children.

About Malibu Farm

Hi! I’m Helene. I started Malibu Farm a few years ago, doing cooking classes, and farm dinners out of my home and in my back yard. I now have a casual counter service cafe at the end of the Malibu Pier and a full service restaurant and bar at the beginning of the pier.

We are not a big corporation or funded by investors, we are a locally owned small business. Our food is super simply prepared, there are no secret ingredients, and many of you have been to my home picking produce and cooked the very same recipes we use at the cafe.
