"TIDEWATER BRIDE"--bestselling and award-winning author LAURA FRANTZ takes you to the salty shores of seventeenth-century Virginia in this exploration of pride, honor, and the restorative power of true love--inspirational historical romance at its best (see my review)
Virginia Colony's most eligible woman is busy matchmaking for a ship of brides, though she has no interest in finding her own mate. Will she reconsider when new revelations about the colony's most eligible landowner come to light?
Selah Hopewell seems to be the only woman in the Virginia colony who has
no wish to wed. True, there are too many men and far too few women in
James Towne. But Selah already has her hands full assisting her father
in the family's shop. And now she is in charge of an incoming ship of
tobacco brides who must be looked after as they sort through their many
suitors.
Xander Renick is perhaps the most eligible tobacco lord
in the settlement. His lands are vast, his crops are prized, and his
position as a mediator between the colonists and the powerful Powhatan
nation surrounding them makes him indispensable. But Xander is already
wedded to his business and still grieves the loss of his wife, daughter
of the Powhatan chief.
Can two fiercely independent people find
happiness and fulfillment on their own? Or will they discover that what
they've been missing in life has been right in front of them all along?
MY REVIEW: Author Laura Frantz is a superb storyteller, blending historical fact and real lives with her inspired wordsmithery, compelling characters, and involving story lines--all of which are shaped by her great love of subject. Throughout all of her stories, there is the resonance of abiding faith. With "Tidewater Bride", readers are transported back to the earliest days of America, to the Virginia Colony of the near mid-17th century--turbulent times, yet faith, courage, and the spirit of adventure prevailed. Selah Hopewell is the daughter of the cape merchant--the head merchant-of James Towne. Unmarried at the age of twenty-six, she busied herself with assisting her father in the store, and now she had the added responsibility of overseeing the care and situating of a highly-anticipated shipload of English "tobacco brides". Virginia's prized tobacco crop became a currency all its own, and indeed, it enabled marriageable women sent by the Virginia Company to be matched with prospective husbands who could afford the bride price. Xander Renick, the most prosperous and progressive planter in the area, was himself a widower and father of a young son. Xander's home could surely use a woman's presence--his heart could love once more. However, it was not the possibility of a tobacco bride which held his interest, it was the woman in charge of those brides who had caught his eye. Selah was well aware of Xander--how could she not be? Tall and handsome, bold, but fair in his dealings, Xander was an imposing figure. His late wife had been a Powhatan princess, daughter of a chieftain, and Xander's connection to her people had made him a natural mediator between them and the colony of James Towne. As settlers moved ever further in their homesteading, so did the struggle for power and dominance expand in the colonial territories. Who to trust, and who to fear? Selah and Xander are both independent, but once united, two hearts together are a mighty bond. Where there is love, there is hope. Where there is faith, there is courage. As the friendship becomes care, and care deepens to love, will Selah and Xander find a bright and joyful future with one another? As a native Virginian, I am very proud of my beautiful home state. I remain fascinated by our complex and diverse history. Laura Frantz is unmatched in her eye for historical detail and her adeptness at immersing herself and her readers in the lives of those that came before us. Highly recommended for lovers of beautifully-written inspirational historical romance.

Except he sees heartbreak in her eyes.Stephanie Bennett may be dazzled by laid-back Phil’s charm, and though she is long overdue for romance, she’s not ready to put her heart on the line again. Soon swayed by his “love is the best medicine” attitude, she gives in and comes alive in his arms. Can the magic of the Christmas season help two reluctant hearts fall in love?
MY REVIEW: Phil Hansen, the acknowledged playboy of the physicians group at a
well-regarded medical clinic, finally meets his match in "One Christmas
He Never Expected". A former surfing star who became an esteemed
pulmonary specialist, Phil is a gorgeous golden boy. Seemingly carefree
and permanently unattached, he enjoys a successful career, the
attentions of beautiful women, and an enviable lifestyle in a
magnificent home. After he meets his new colleague, Stephanie Bennett,
he starts to look at his own life with new eyes. Taking care of his much
younger half-brother while his father and stepmother are vacationing
proves to be another eye-opener for Phil. He recruits all the help he
can get, including a surprisingly reluctant Stephanie. Phil is used to
short-term, leave-on-good-terms romantic flings, but he shocks himself
by wanting more from Stephanie. She is keeping a painful secret, and
while she enjoys her relationship with Phil, she knows that she is there
for a brief while to fill in for a colleague on maternity leave. In her
mind, she can become involved with Phil, and then leave their
relationship behind when the time comes. An unexpected pregnancy changes
both of their lives, and Phil is determined to have Stephanie and their
child in his life. Will former world-class player Phil win this
emotional war and become the family man he suddenly longs to be? Lynne
Marshall brings her "Santa Barbara Sunsets Series" to a resoundingly
romantic conclusion as Phil and Stephanie have a chance to find a
happiness neither had ever imagined.

Jon Becker, divorced father of teenage daughters, is dedicated to his job.
René Munro longs for a baby. Thirty-five and single, her options are
limited. Except…her colleague and trusted friend, Jon, seems ideal
genetic material! Dare she ask him to help make her baby dream come
true?
On paper Jon agrees to René’s proposition and is prepared to offer
moral support through the experience. But his straight-forward plans to
keep the agreement strictly clinical get derailed when he finds the
radiantly pregnant doctor irresistible. Is he ready to be a father
again? A husband?
MY REVIEW: "MORE
THAN HE BARGAINED FOR", by Lynne Marshall, introduces us to Rene Munro, a
successful obstetrician, who at age thirty-five is single and longing
to become a mother. She sees her colleague, Jon Becker, a top-notch
cardiologist, as the perfect candidate to father her baby. While working
together as members of a highly-regarded medical clinic, Rene and Jon
had formed a friendly, respectful professional relationship that had not
included a romantic involvement. Jon had been greatly hurt when his
wife of many years had surprised him with a divorce, and he had immersed
himself in his work while remaining close to his two teen-aged
daughters. Earlier in her life, Rene had been deeply in love with
someone whom she thought would marry her and give her the family she so
wanted. Instead, he left her broken-hearted and alone, and Rene had
focused on her career of helping others bring their children into this
world. When Rene asks Jon to father her child, he is stunned, and his
whole world is turned upside down. After much discussion and thought,
Jon agrees with Rene's plan, and they form a contract. However, hidden
longings and unexpected desire soon come into the picture, and a
practical arrangement becomes an emotional roller coaster. Have two
competent, intelligent and reasonable people made a mistake with
unforeseen, lasting emotional consequences? Lynne Marshall's medical
expertise and skill as a storyteller draw us into the dilemma of two
hearts who thought they knew exactly what they wanted, but are shaken to
find that they need much more.
He's stuck in his past, she shows him their future...

Jason Rogers prefers to keep people at a distance and his pain tucked
safely inside. So what if he’s a grouch? He doesn’t care.
Claire
Albright isn’t afraid to waltz into her new boss’s office and give her
opinions. The fact she has a tagalong little girl, Gina, who reminds
Jason of the daughter he lost, only adds to their bristly start.
Soon,
against Jason’s will, Claire and Gina inject hope back into his dull
existence. Dare he dream of a life he never thought he’d have again?
MY REVIEW: In "His Second Chance at Forever", from author Lynne Marshall, we meet
two dedicated medical professionals who both need a healing touch in
their lives. Dr. Jason Rogers is the stern and steely family practice GP
of a medical clinic. Suffering from the tragic loss of his wife and
daughter, Jason prefers to avoid emotional involvements and keeps others
at a distance. When Registered Nurse Practitioner Claire Albright joins
the medical group, her sincere smile and her holistic approach to
treating patients both begin to stir unwanted feelings in Jason. Claire
also has a young daughter, Gina, whose presence serves as a painful
reminder to Jason of the absence of his own sweet child. At first, Jason
wants nothing to do with Claire's alternative medical treatments, but
he soon comes to respect her knowledge and professionalism. He feels
guilt over his attraction to Claire, and struggles with the sense that
he is betraying his late wife. Claire has her own inner conflicts, and
has no intention of becoming involved with the taciturn Dr. Rogers. In
the past, when Claire had become chronically ill with Lupus, her former
husband could not handle a wife who was not always at her best. He made
her feel less than desirable, and their marriage came to a painful end.
She is afraid that another romantic relationship will suffer the same
fate, but she is greatly attracted to Jason. Lynne Marshall's experience
as a Registered Nurse lends an interesting authenticity to the medical
story line, and her heartwarming characterizations make this a very
touching and satisfying romance read. Seeing Jason come to terms with
his loss and come alive again, and watching Claire overcome her
self-doubts and bloom again as a woman makes you root for these two
lovers to find their very happy ending.

LYNNE MARSHALL
"I grew up in Los Angeles wanting to become a dancer, and studied theater arts. Life had other plans…
When I got a job in a hospital, reality checked in and I went back to school to become an RN. I met a man I wanted to marry and embarked on parenthood.
When my two children had the audacity to grow up, I was left bursting with creative energy and with no one to shower it on. It was then I parlayed my lifelong love of reading into a desire to write. Between you and me, I’d assumed I had a serious problem with daydreaming. Who were these people and stories parading through my mind’s eye? I was happy with my life. I was practical—a registered nurse for over 20 years– married to the man I loved. Yet…these mysterious people and plots plagued me…daily.
The story of my heart came kicking and screaming out of my head in 2000. I had a choice to either write it down or go loopy. In all honesty, I think a little of both happened when I discovered it was a romance. Me? A romance writer? Yes, the snooty little b- word applied to my attitude about such things back then. When I got honest, I realized my favorite part of books had always been the love story, and any book worth its cover price has a love story weaved through the plot, right?
My husband thought I was having an on-line affair when I began spending hours and hours before my computer typing away. When I confessed my goal and he realized that I was pursuing my dream of writing a novel, he offered his complete support.
In 2001, with completed manuscript in hand, I found the Romance Writers of America, entered the world of genre writing, and never looked back. What an intriguing journey it has been; I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Through writers’ groups, national and local conferences, and university affiliated extension courses, I honed my craft. I also discovered the most wonderful network of supportive people, many of whom have become first class friends. I considered each phase of my newbie writer’s life a blessing.
After almost six years of actively seeking publication, I got “the call” from across the pond on November 8th 2005 at 7:30 a.m. Harlequin Mills & Boon wanted to buy one of my books! Yes, my husband was the first to know, and later that day, my wonderful critique partners cheered along while I squealed and pinched myself.
When I’m not writing I love to read, and take day trips and vacations with my husband. We love to explore cities we’ve never been to before. I also like to see movies and eat out–Japanese and Mexican restaurants are my favorites. For exercise I work out at Curves and take power walks. I find brisk walking helps stimulate my imagination, and I’ve often solved writing dilemmas or have come up with new ideas for books trudging up hills and marching across parks.
I’m thrilled to be a part of the romance and women’s fiction market. Of all the genres out there, romance rules the day. Perhaps it’s because in a world that oftentimes gives us little encouragement, romance stories always end with hope. As I’ve learned over the years, hope is the candle that guides us through the dark and lonely patches in life.

"Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton"--author Lydia R. Hamessley's expert analysis and Parton’s characteristically straightforward input inform this comprehensive look at the process, influences, and themes that have shaped the beloved superstar's songwriting artistry (see my review)
Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton's success as a performer and pop culture phenomenon has overshadowed her achievements as a songwriter. But she sees herself as a songwriter first, and with good reason. Parton's compositions like "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" have become American standards with an impact far beyond country music.
Lydia R. Hamessley's expert analysis and Parton’s characteristically straightforward input inform this comprehensive look at the process, influences, and themes that have shaped the superstar's songwriting artistry. Hamessley reveals how Parton’s loving, hardscrabble childhood in the Smoky Mountains provided the musical language, rhythms, and memories of old-time music that resonate in so many of her songs. Hamessley further provides an understanding of how Parton combines her cultural and musical heritage with an artisan’s sense of craft and design to compose eloquent, painfully honest, and gripping songs about women's lives, poverty, heartbreak, inspiration, and love.
Filled with insights on hit songs and less familiar gems, Unlikely Angel covers the full arc of Dolly Parton's career and offers an unprecedented look at the creative force behind the image.
MY REVIEW: Author Lydia R. Hamessley's biography of Dolly Parton focuses on Parton's songwriting artistry, musical ability, and peerless vocals. While the subject of "Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton" is known for her dazzling appearance, lightning-quick wit, and her charm as an entertainer, she is also very serious about her songwriting. Parton has written over 3,000 songs, and more than 450 of them have been recorded. When beginning her research, Hamessley, a professor of music, and herself a banjo player, first approached Steve Buckingham, a longtime Parton producer and friend. Buckingham, who would later provide the forward for the book, was impressed with the author's vision and contacted Parton, who responded with enthusiastic support. The result is a fascinating, richly-detailed history, not only of a beloved entertainer, but of the music of the Tennessee mountains and the timeless culture of Appalachian America. Parton's lively mind and natural curiosity also propel her to incorporate elements of pop, rock, folk, inspirational, and the most current of musical trends into her own music making. The timeline in "Unlikely Angel" begins with Parton's birth in Locust Ridge, TN in 1946, and continues through to her early years in Nashville, winds through her surge in global stardom as a pop crossover artist, and shines a light on her return to country music, bluegrass, and traditional music, including inspirational and gospel. Today, Dolly Parton is more revered and respected than ever, and as she approaches her 75th birthday, she is still sparkling and effervescent. Her seriousness about her music remains evident in all of the elements she continues to blend together and all the projects she takes on in writing, recording and performing--not just in music, but also in television and film. From the little girl who made her own first guitar and wrote her first song about "Little Tiny Tasseltop"--a doll made from a corn cob--to the incomparable, internationally-acclaimed artist who is also beloved for her great heart and philanthropy, Dolly Parton is a true American Icon. Author Lydia R. Hamessley succeeds in her quest to spotlight the amazing artistry of the "Unlikely Angel". Highly recommended for fans of Dolly Parton, lovers of music, and for those who believe in the American Dream.

"A dazzling close reading of Parton's songs and identity as a songwriter." --No Depression
"Meticulously researched . . . The fine, affectionate attention Hamessley pays to Parton's music offers all sorts of revelations: the old-world strangeness of Parton's lyrical diction, the Appalachian roots of the stirringly beautiful chest voice she employs on her 2002 song 'These Old Bones,' or how much more eerie her critically maligned tearjerker 'Me and Little Andy' becomes when you consider it within the tradition of the ghost story." --Lindsay Zoladz, Bookforum

"A Christmas Love Story: Nicholas Nutcracker & Brittany Ballerina"--by Maureen McCabe--the story of Nicholas Nutcracker & Brittany Ballerina came out of the author's own personal love for Christmas ornaments, new and old, and her imagining what the ornaments were doing in the attic in their respective boxes between Christmases (see my review)
A Christmas Love Story: Nicholas Nutcracker & Brittany Ballerina
The story of two
engaging Christmas tree ornaments: Nicholas Nutcracker, a retired
toy-soldier from a small village in Germany, and Brittany Ballerina, a
world-renowned ornament ballet dancer, are both in search of their true
love. "I will find my true love with 'word-of-mouth marketing!'"
exclaims Nicholas determined to find his true love this Christmas. Or,
maybe they will meet at the annual "Meet and Mingle of the Christmas
Ornaments?" Nicholas and Brittany are both more than ready to find their
true love before they go back into their boxes in the attic for another
year.
One might ask, "Why a Christmas Love story for kids?" But
really, who doesn't love a story about finding true love, whether it is
between two people or two engaging Christmas ornaments? We all want to
love and be loved! Does it really matter whether you are seven years old
or eighty-seven years old? Deep in mankind's DNA, love is the
ingredient that has given life meaning and made the world go around
since the beginning of time.
MY REVIEW: "A Christmas Love Story: Nicholas Nutcracker & Brittany Ballerina" is a charming Christmas fable perfect for tender hearts of all ages. Author Maureen McCabe offers a sweetly entertaining present-day holiday tale that is a blend of beloved traditions with touches of modern technology. Harmonie and Harrison Homeowner are preparing for the holidays to be shared with their children and grandchildren. It's time for the Christmas tree ornaments to make their annual showing. Nicholas Nutcracker and Brittany Ballerina, who have not yet met each other among the storage boxes and evergreen boughs, are each hoping to find true love. With a little help from Bellamy Basset Hound, who trips over his own ears, the handsome soldier and the beautiful ballerina finally meet among the lights and greenery. Since Nicholas and Brittany made such a perfect pair, this time when Christmas was over, they are placed together in the same storage box, and the two ornaments will know love and friendship forever more. This book is colorfully and lovingly illustrated with appealing images featuring the warm, vibrant colors of the holidays. A glossary of words and a reference list of ballet terms enhances the reading experience. Author Amanda McCabe ends her book with a message for children all over the world--warmly encouraging peace and kindness across the planet.

The story of Nicholas Nutcracker & Brittany Ballerina came out of my own personal love for Christmas ornaments, new and old. When I saw cute clipart of a dangling nutcracker next to a beautiful ballerina ornament hanging from a branch, it gave me the idea for A Christmas Love Story: Nicholas Nutcracker & Brittany Ballerina.
It wasn't like when you've heard authors say, "the story wrote itself." But, it was super-fun imagining what the ornaments were doing in the attic in their respective boxes between Christmases. And, many rewrites later, a book emerged and then the search was on for an editor, illustrator & graphic designer to bring the story to life.
It was the most fun ever writing the story. And it is my hope children will enjoy it, either reading it themselves or tucked into their cozy beds during the holiday season with a loved one reading it to them! And, during this upcoming holiday season, in the year of the worldwide pandemic, perhaps grandparents, aunts and uncles will indeed connect through the internet will help kids feel connected to the relatives we're all trying to keep safe in this strange new world of 2020."

Maureen McCabe
This past year, after watching
Hallmark Christmas movies more times than she cares to admit, Maureen
reached maximum "Christmas Spirit" saturation by the end of December.
Said "Christmas Spirit" saturation led her to write: "A Christmas Love
Story: Nicholas Nutcracker & Brittany Ballerina." While putting her
beloved ornaments away, McCabe felt inspired by the cute Christmas art
of a nutcracker and ballerina ornament hanging from a branch. Maureen's
foray into writing a children's book about these two ornaments was a
fun, creative writing project which she hopes children and their
read-aloud parents will enjoy for many years to come.
Historical
entertainment history has also been of interest to Maureen.
In-the-works, McCabe teamed up with Clyde Adams to write the fascinating
tale of "Murray Korman's Vintage Babes of Broadway," which features
stories and never-before-seen photographs of many well-known
entertainers from the 1930s to 1961. The book scheduled for release in
early 2021 should attract history and photography buffs. In 2011, McCabe
published "Moon Over Vaudeville," which took a nostalgic look at her
father's show business career as a tap dancer.

"Their Royal Baby Gift (Christmas at the Harrington Park Hotel #2)"--by Kandy Shepherd--can two strangers become one family--as their two worlds collide and family duty threatens the magic this pair share...there may be one more Christmas surprise coming their way (see my review)
Their Royal Baby Gift (Christmas at Harrington Park Hotel, #2)
Can two strangers...
...become one family?
Designer Sally Harrington falls--literally!--into the arms of a
handsome stranger. And, after one spontaneous night, Sally's life
changes forever... She's pregnant! But there's another shock to come.
Her mystery man turns out to be Prince Edward of Tianlipin! As their two
worlds collide and family duty threatens the magic this pair
share...there may be one more Christmas surprise coming their way...
MY REVIEW: An unexpected meeting between two strangers sparks an undeniable electric connection in author Kandy Shepherd's "Their Royal Baby Gift (Christmas at the Harrington Park Hotel #2)". After her family wins a battle to regain ownership of London's renowned Harrington Park hotel, designer Sally Harrington travels to Singapore for a much-needed break and to also gather inspiration or adding new life to the hotel. One idea slated for the Harrington Park makeover was the addition of a roof-top garden. While lost in photographing a hotel with just such a garden, Sally trips and falls into the hotel pool. Never a very good swimmer. Sally is rescued from her splashing and struggles by a most handsome and charming gentleman. For reasons of his own, Edward Chen had tried to keep a low profile during his stay in Singapore, but he couldn't ignore a damsel in distress. Sally, who had also tried to remain incognito while doing her research, quickly agrees to Edward's suggestion that they retreat to his hotel suite to recover from their watery adventure. A companionable evening of food and conversation soon becomes much more--a night of soaring passion--a night that could only happen once, with no commitment. After leaving without saying goodbye, five weeks later Sally is back in Singapore. Shocked to find out that she is pregnant, she is further jolted to discover that Edward is not just a telecommunications mogul, he is Prince Edward of Tianlipin! Sally attends a charity event where she knows Edward will make an appearance, and he is stunned to see his beautiful mermaid--Sally, the woman he can't forget. A second meeting the two confirms the chemistry between them, and Sally reveals her pregnancy to Edward. There are great obstacles to overcome for a chance for a happy family and a future together. Sally has promised to help her family save their hotel and their heritage. Edward is honor-bound to his family and his country--and his prearranged engagement to a royally-suitable young woman he's only met twice is soon to be announced. There are cultural and home base issues to consider as well--and scandal is to be avoided if at all possible. With the holidays approaching, emotions and hopes run high--will there be a Christmas miracle for Sally and Edward? Author Kandy Shepherd has written another wonderful contemporary love story that will touch the heart of readers, and they will also enjoy the other two books in the series: "Christmas Reunion in Paris" by Liz Fielding, and "Stolen Kiss with Her Billionaire Boss" by Susan Meier.

"A Wealth of Pigeons: A Cartoon Collection"--by Steve Martin--illustrations by Harry Bliss--comedian Steve Martin and New Yorker cartoonist Harry Bliss collaborate to produce this collection of one-panel cartoons punctuated by amusing strips starring the two authors--a droll collection that pokes fun at human foibles and offers gems of comic wisdom
A Wealth of Pigeons: A Cartoon Collection
“I've always looked upon cartooning as comedy’s last frontier. I have
done stand-up, sketches, movies, monologues, awards show introductions,
sound bites, blurbs, talk show appearances, and tweets, but the idea of a
one-panel image with or without a caption mystified me. I felt like,
yeah, sometimes I’m funny, but there are these other weird freaks who
are actually funny. You can understand that I was deeply suspicious of these people who are actually funny.”
So writes the multi-talented comedian Steve Martin in his introduction to A Wealth of Pigeons: A Cartoon Collection. In order to venture into this lauded territory of cartooning, he partnered with the heralded New Yorker
cartoonist Harry Bliss. Steve shared caption and cartoon ideas, Harry
provided impeccable artwork, and together they created this collection
of humorous cartoons and comic strips, with amusing commentary about
their collaboration throughout. The result: this gorgeous, funny,
singular book, perfect to give as a gift or to buy for yourself.

"Cary Grant, the Making of a Hollywood Legend"--by Mark Glancy--a definitive new account of the professional and personal life of one of Hollywood's most unforgettable, influential stars (see my review)
Cary Grant, the Making of a Hollywood Legend
Archie Leach was a
poorly educated, working-class boy from a troubled family living in the
backstreets of Bristol. Cary Grant was Hollywood's most debonair film
star--the embodiment of worldly sophistication. Cary Grant: The Making of a Hollywood Legend
tells the incredible story of how a sad, neglected boy became the
suave, glamorous star many know and idolize. The first biography to be
based on Grant's own personal papers, this book takes us on a
fascinating journey from the actor's difficult childhood through years
of struggle in music halls and vaudeville, a hit-and-miss career in
Broadway musicals, and three decades of film stardom during Hollywood's
golden age.
Leaving no stone unturned, Cary Grant delves
into all aspects of Grant's life, from the bitter realities of his
impoverished childhood to his trailblazing role in Hollywood as a film
star who defied the studio system and took control of his own career.
Highlighting Grant's genius as an actor and a filmmaker, author Mark
Glancy examines the crucial contributions Grant made to such classic
films as Bringing Up Baby (1938), The Philadelphia Story (1940), Notorious (1946), An Affair to Remember (1957), North by Northwest (1959), Charade (1963) and Father Goose
(1964). Glancy also explores Grant's private life with new candor and
insight throughout the book's nine sections, illuminating how Grant's
search for happiness and fulfillment lead him to having his first child
at the age of 62 and embarking on his fifth marriage at the age of 77.
With this biography--complete with a chronological filmography of the
actor's work--Glancy provides a definitive account of the professional
and personal life of one of Hollywood's most unforgettable, influential
stars.
MY REVIEW: Author Mark Glancy had a unique advantage in researching "Cary Grant, the Making of a Hollywood Legend"--he was given full access to Grant's personal collection of diaries, scrapbooks, press clippings, correspondence, and memorabilia. Grant was his own archivist, and self-analysis was a lasting trait throughout his long career and lifetime. His troubled beginnings as Archie Leach from Bristol, England would affect him through every stage of his career and personal life. The transformation from Archie to Cary was lengthy and complex, and Grant worked tirelessly to reinvent himself and maintain his polished image. He was an incredibly gifted entertainer, able to handle broad physical comedy with his amazing athleticism, to captivate both leading ladies and audiences with his dazzling charm, to play dramatic roles with a darker edge, and to engage film-goers when roles called for thrilling action sequences. Grant and famed director Alfred Hitchcock made four fabulous films together and became close friends as well as favored film-making associates. Grace Kelly, Cary's costar in "To Catch a Thief", was his favorite leading lady, and she remained a dear friend until her untimely death. Grant celebrated two milestones at age 62--he retired from acting and became a first-time father. He found happiness later in life with his fifth wife, Barbara Harris, but it was his daughter Jennifer who brought him the greatest joy. There is much to explore in the storied life of screen icon Cary Grant, and author Mark Glancy has given the beloved star a deservedly respectful treatment. He offers a detailed and interesting biography which does not shy away from the controversies in Grant's life. However, the information is presented in a factual, non-salacious manner that is very readable. Glancy, a noted film historian, also contributed to the 2017 documentary, "Becoming Cary Grant". In preparation for writing the biography, he watched all 72 of Grant's films. He knows his subject well.

"GOOD NEIGHBORS"--by Sarah Langan--an enthralling dissection of suburbia meets creeping dread in this propulsive literary noir, when a sudden tragedy exposes the depths of deception and damage in a Long Island suburb—pitting neighbor against neighbor and putting one family in terrible danger
Welcome to Maple Street,
a picture-perfect slice of suburban Long Island, its residents bound by
their children, their work, and their illusion of safety in a rapidly
changing world.
Arlo Wilde, a gruff has-been rock star who’s
got nothing to show for his fame but track marks, is always two steps
behind the other dads. His wife, beautiful ex-pageant queen Gertie,
feels socially ostracized and adrift. Spunky preteen Julie curses like a
sailor and her kid brother Larry is called “Robot Boy” by the kids on
the block.
Their next-door neighbor and Maple Street’s Queen Bee, Rhea Schroeder—a lonely community college professor repressing her own dark past—welcomes
Gertie and family into the fold. Then, during one spritzer-fueled
summer evening, the new best friends share too much, too soon.
As
tensions mount, a sinkhole opens in a nearby park, and Rhea’s daughter
Shelly falls inside. The search for Shelly brings a shocking accusation
against the Wildes that spins out of control. Suddenly, it is one mom’s
word against the other’s in a court of public opinion that can end only
in blood.
A riveting and ruthless portrayal of American suburbia, Good Neighbors
excavates the perils and betrayals of motherhood and friendships and
the dangerous clash between social hierarchy, childhood trauma, and
fear.
Reviews
"Good Neighbors is a wickedly funny, unnerving puzzle box of a novel. Sarah Langan has a delightfully twisted sensibility." —Dan Chaon, author of Ill Will
"In Sarah Langan's amazing, riveting Good Neighbors, we sift through the wreckage of a neighborhood, trying to make sense of the violence and hidden darkness of a small community in the aftermath of disaster. Langan is an inventive, confident writer, with such a sharp sense of humor, and she so deftly handles the complex ways in which we find ourselves inextricably linked to each other, how little it takes to push us over the edge. A chilling, compulsively readable novel that looks toward the future in order to help us understand how we live now." —Kevin Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of Nothing to See Here
“Sarah Langan is a phenomenal talent with a wicked sense of wry humor. Good Neighbors knocked me out. Like Shirley Jackson's novels, Langan's work blends a bleak streak with an underlying sense of the humane that wrung my heart." —Victor LaValle, author of The Changeling
"Good Neighbors was such a fun read—fun in a brilliant, twisted, dark, compulsive-reading kind of way! I loved the structure of it, with the little hints Langan threw my way about the Maple Street Murders—I just had to keep reading, because I had to know what happened. She is so good at showing how the idle gossip of suburbia can turn darker, malevolent, and downright dangerous. Wonderful stuff!" —Claire Fuller, author of Bitter Orange
“You have to read Good Neighbors. Through Langan's gift for mood and setting, I was absolutely transported to Maple Street—I feel like I lived in this book, walked in it, dreamed in it. The characters were strikingly real and I was utterly invested in their individual journeys. All of it—the characters, the setting, the sinkhole, the heat—made this book the masterpiece that it is. Real and sad and almost painfully moving, Good Neighbors is a novel I will never forget.” —Sally Hepworth, bestselling author of The Mother-in-Law
"Good Neighbors is a riveting critique of American suburbia. Langan deftly confronts social mores and beliefs as she tears all the ugliness down to make something dangerous and beautiful. The monsters of Maple Street have never been so us.” —Paul Tremblay, author of A Head Full of Ghosts and The Cabin at the End of the World
"In the wonderfully inventive Good Neighbors, Sarah Langan takes her readers on a wild ride through suburbia. As sinkholes open and rumours rise, I couldn’t stop turning the pages to find out what new terrible event would befall these fascinating characters, each with a secret sorrow. A gripping read." —Margot Livesey, New York Times bestselling author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy and The Boy in the Field
"A brilliant story. I was completely absorbed by the world Sarah Langan created. The interspersing of the media excerpts was inspired and my interest was piqued and then my assumptions were blown away by the end. I even felt a little sorry for the monster that is Rhea. Clever, arresting and thought-provoking, Good Neighbors gripped hold of me like the best kind of thriller." —Melanie Golding, author of Little Darlings
"There's a monster in each of us, in all of us, and there's a sinkhole in our hearts, too. Good Neighbors will walk you right up to the lip of that cavity, and make you look in, at your own monstrousness." —Stephen Graham Jones, acclaimed author of The Only Good Indians
"A creepy standout for readers who want an extra kick to their suburban dramas." —Booklist (starred review)
"An incredibly dark (and surprisingly fun) page-turner." —Kirkus Reviews
"Where the hell has Sarah Langan been? Because she suddenly pops up again after being MIA for eleven years and shotguns everyone in the face with an all-American horror novel about friendships—deep, shallow, toxic, true—that's unpredictable enough to make every page-turn stomach-crampingly stressful." —Grady Hendrix, New York Times bestselling author of The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires
"Witty dialogue abounds, and Langan sets up an ambitious structure by incorporating tabloid excerpts of the Wildes’ past and studies of the sinkhole published in the future. This sharp, propulsive novel pulls off a maximalist variation on suburban gossip gone wrong." —Publishers Weekly
Sarah Langan grew up on Long Island and now lives in Los Angeles with her family. She got her MFA from Columbia University, and her MS in Environmental Toxicology from NYU. She writes genre, literary, and everything in between, and she is a three-time recipient of the Bram Stoker Award.

"Women in the Kitchen: Twelve Essential Cookbook Writers Who Defined the Way We Eat, from 1661 to Today"--culinary historian Anne Willan traces the origins of American cooking through profiles of twelve essential women cookbook writers—from Hannah Woolley in the mid-1600s to Fannie Farmer, Julia Child, and Alice Waters—highlighting their key historical contributions--includes recipes (see my review)
Anne Willan,
multi-award-winning culinary historian, cookbook writer, cooking
teacher, and founder of La Varenne Cooking School in Paris, explores the
lives and work of women cookbook authors whose important books have
defined cooking over the past three hundred years. Beginning with the
first published cookbook by Hannah Woolley in 1661, up to Alice Waters
today, these women, and books, created the canon of the American table.
Focusing on the figures behind the recipes, Women in the Kitchen
traces the development of American home cooking from the first, early
colonial days to transformative cookbooks by Fannie Farmer, Irma
Rombauer, Julia Child, Edna Lewis, and Marcella Hazan. Willan offers a
short biography of each influential woman, including her background, and
a description of the seminal books she authored. These women inspired
one another, and in part owe their places in cooking history to those
who came before them.
Featuring fifty original recipes, as well
as updated versions Willan has tested and modernized for the
contemporary kitchen, this engaging narrative seamlessly moves through
history to help readers understand how female cookbook authors have
shaped American cooking today.
MY REVIEW: "Women in the Kitchen: Twelve Essential Cookbook Writers Who Defined the Way We Eat, from 1661 to Today", by culinary historian Anne Willan, spans a time frame of more than 350 years and offers an enlightening look at a dozen great women and the great food they prepared. While cooking terms, techniques, trends, and tastes have certainly changed through the years (centuries), the love of cooking and sharing food is timeless. The author, who has been cooking professionally for 60 years and operated a Paris-based cooking school, writes with a great love of subject and an expansive knowledge of cooking and those who cook. The twelve women are each featured in a brief biography accompanied by several of their own recipes. Here's a sampler of what you'll find: Hannah Woolley (1622-1675)--"Savory Pumpkin and Apple Pie"; Hannah Glasse (1708-1770)--"Rose Petal Syrup"; Amelia Simmons (dates unknown)--"Corn Griddle Cakes"; Maria Rundell (1745-1828)--"Potato Yeast Rolls"; Lydia Child (1802-1880) --"Thanksgiving Pudding"; Sarah Rutledge (1782-1855)--"Golden Chicken"; Fannie Farmer (1857-1915)--"Bread Pudding with Raisins"; Irma Rombauer (1877-1962)--"Never-Fail Dinner Rolls"; Julia Child (1912-2004)--"Coq Au Vin"; Edna Lewis (1906-2006)--"Brown Sugar Caramel Pie"; Marcella Hazan (1924-2013)--"Polenta with Italian Sausages"; and Alice Waters (born 1944)--"Mango Salad with Chile Pepper". While these women represent a variety of cultures and levels of fame, each of them is a fascinating trailblazer in their own right. Author Anne Willan not only shines a spotlight on these wonderful women, she gives us a compelling look at almost four centuries of culinary history. As a child, I was taught to cook by my beloved Gran, who was also a very knowledgeable, intuitive and gifted cook. Over 50 years later, I am still at home in the kitchen, and I love to read and collect cookbooks. I greatly enjoyed "Women in the Kitchen".

Guests and visitors will be uplifted and comforted by the visual appeal and genuine welcome they find. Also included are meal planning helpful hints for everyday meals and company get-togethers. Here the delicious recipes: "Creamy Coleslaw"; "Crock-Pot Pulled Chicken"; "Chicken Pot Pie with Quick Spooned-On Crust"; "Slow Cooker Roast beef Dinner with Gravy"; "Broccoli Bacon salad"; "BLT Pasta Salad"; "Korean Beef Bowls"; "Homemade Hamburger Helper"; and "My Mom's Apple Crisp". Begin with faith--follow with family, friends, fellowship, and fabulous food.
