Sometimes The Best Man Is The One You Least Expect...
MY REVIEW: "The Best Man", from author Kristan Higgins, is a well-paced, funny, and
thoughtful romance. Faith Holland's big, boisterous family of
winemakers was touched by tragedy when Faith and her mother were
involved in an auto accident. Faith was only twelve, and not seriously
hurt, but her mother was killed. Thinking that she had distracted her
mother, and caused the accident, Faith told everyone that she was having
one her epileptic seizures at the time. She carried guilt over the
accident throughout her life, thinking everyone blamed her for her
mother's death. She overcompensated by being a do-gooder, but she never
felt like she really fit in anywhere. Jeremy Lyon, son of another
wine-making family, seemed to understand Faith better than anyone, and
they became high school sweethearts. Jeremy's best friend, Levi Cooper,
lived in a trailer park and helped his mother raise his younger sister
after his father abandoned them. Faith and Levi always had a prickly
relationship, but he was protective of her when it came to her epileptic
seizures. When Faith and Jeremy later became engaged, she thought she
would have all she ever wanted--marriage to her best friend, who was the
love of her life. Levi was Jeremy's best man, and during the ceremony,
when the minister asked the fateful question: "Does anyone here know of a
reason these two should not be wed?", Levi urged Jeremy to speak the
truth about himself. Yes, Jeremy loved faith, but Jeremy was gay, and
Levi knew a marriage between Faith and Jeremy would lead to heartbreak.
So, Jeremy came clean, the wedding was stopped, and Faith was shattered.
She left her home in New York State and moved to San Francisco, where
she started a successful career as a landscape architect. Years later,
she returns home for an extended visit, and Levi is now the chief of
police. A decorated war veteran, Levi has lost his mother to cancer, and
he is still caring for his younger sister, making sure she goes to
college and has a good life. The relationship between Faith and Levi is
still combative, filled with verbal sparring, but the added element of
sexual awareness makes it even more fiery. Levi keeps his true emotions
well-hidden, but the heat in his green eyes warms Faith from head to
toe. Could it be that after all these years, Levi is truly "the best
man"? Can Faith and Levi overcome old hurts and embrace a new love to
last a lifetime? Interesting characters, beautiful wine country, and
laugh-out-loud humor add balance to the poignancy of the love story.

What if the perfect match is a perfect surprise?
MY REVIEW: Author Kristan Higgins' sharply sassy and sexy style of writing is
perfectly on display in "The Perfect Match", Book Two in her "Heron
Cove" series. Honor Holland has always been the "good one" in the
Holland family. The conservative one who came home after grad school and
stayed, helping to run the family business, The Blue Heron Vineyard. At
age thirty five, and unmarried, the wheels in her brain start to spin
when her gynecologist, a family friend, tells her that "thirty five is
considered advanced maternal age". Honor has been in love with Brogan
Cain for as long she can remember. Friends since childhood, their
relationship had progressed to casual dating and then to casual
intimacy. Brogan liked Honor, loved her in a way, but that way was far
different from the feelings she had for him. With her head still
spinning from the doctor's "advanced age" comments, Honor, with
encouragement from her best friend, Dana, proposes to Brogan. His
rejection is crushing, but even that doesn't prepare Honor for the blow
that comes when Brogan becomes engaged to Dana just a few weeks later.
In the meantime, a friend of Honor's grandmother has a grand-nephew from
England in a bit of a bind. Tom Barlow, who taught mechanical
engineering at the local college was about to lose his work visa, and he
would have to return to England. However, Tom very much wanted to stay
in America to be near the son of his deceased fiance. While Tom and
Honor don't exactly hit it off at first, they sort of grow on each
other, and then sparks become an attraction. They agree to help each
other--Tom wants to stay in the States and be a part of his "unofficial
stepson's" life--and Honor wants a family of her own. However, they have
to make their relationship look real--to the government, and to their
family and friends. The more time they spend together, and the closer
they become, it won't be so hard to pull off a loving relationship, will
it? A fast and funny romance with a touch of poignancy and a generous
helping of humor from the talented Kristan Higgins.
