MY REVIEW:  “Starlight Serenade” is a delightfully involving historical romance with elements of mystery and suspense. Author Debra E. Marvin sets the story in Arizona of the 1930’s, and she wonderfully captures the atmosphere and energy of the time and place. After the death of her mother, Clara Longworth heads for Hollywood and hopes for stardom and a successful life for herself and her younger brother, Henry. Their journey takes a detour, however, when their bus breaks down outside Flagstaff, Arizona. They are given a lift to the hotel by none other than famed author Zane Grey, and that is just the beginning of their adventure along the new (and forever famous) Route 66. Clara is a talented dancer and singer, and Henry, while enormously gifted, doesn’t quite see life as others do—he is somewhat in a world of his own. Events occur quite quickly to make it seem as though Clara’s dreams for the future may be rerouted, just like she and Henry were diverted on their way to Hollywood. However, Fate has much in store for the Longworths, including a sweet surprise romance and a renewal of faith for Clara. Many obstacles have to be overcome on the road to happiness, and compromise may be the only answer. Danger lurks, though, and courage will be needed to in order to solve the mystery—and survive. The author does a terrific job of story building, and once I started reading, I had to keep on reading it to learn the outcome. This is a short work of fiction—a novella—but it is fully-realized. Readers are in for a real treat when they travel back to a time when the famed Route 66, also known as “The Mother Road”, was a newly-minted pathway which would link the Midwest to the West Coast.

Debra E. Marvin tries not to run too far from real life but the imagination born out of being an only child has a powerful draw. Besides, the voices in her head tend to agree with all the sensible things she says. MY REVIEW:  I am a longtime fan of author Carol Ericson, and her new “Target: Timberline” series gets off to a great start with “Single Father Sheriff”. Cooper Sloane never imagined that accepting the position of sheriff in the rural community of Timberline, Washington would lead to so many changes in his life. With his wife’s passing away, he was left with the care of their young daughter, Steffi. Torn between duty and parenthood, he juggles them both as best he can. Coop’s easygoing demeanor belies his sharp instincts and powers of observation—he is as dedicated a lawman as he is a dad. When Kendall Rush returns to Timberline to settle her aunt’s estate, she is haunted by the still-unsolved kidnapping of her twin sister, Kayla, when the girls were just five years old. Two other local children were also taken, and the case became known as the “Timberline Trio”. Twenty five years later, several other children are now missing, and the cases are eerily similar. As strange and dangerous events begin to target Kendall, Coop becomes her protector. FBI agent Duke Harper’s abusive childhood had left him with trust issues, and the betrayal by the beautiful woman he had loved had left him with embittered emotions. "I was always a bookworm.  I think most authors are.  I started reading romance when I was about 12 or 13.  The first romance novel I read was Victoria Holt’s Secret Woman.  I went on to read all of Ms. Holt’s books and started devouring all the gothic romances of that time.  I’m also a huge Georgette Heyer fan and have read all of her books.

As an English major at UCLA, I read a heavy dose of the classics, and later I started reading a lot of non-fiction and true crime.  What better way to combine my love of romance with my interest in true crime than by writing romantic suspense?!  I have written over 25 books for Harlequin Intrigue (check out my Books page!), and have self-published a few more books, including a romantic comedy (check out my Indie Books page!).

MY REVIEW:  A new book from author Mary Connealy is always a treat, and when it's the start of a new series, then that's even better. The "Cimarron Legacy" series begins with Book One, "No Way Up".  A near-death experience in an avalanche and the possibility of losing a leg makes ranch patriarch Chance Boden determined to bring his three adult children together as a family. He wants them united in heart and mind, for their own sake, as well as for the future of the ranch. As Chance departs to receive medical treatment for his leg, he leaves ranch hand Heath Kincaid in charge of the siblings, and he orders them all to follow the directives he has laid out in his will. The three grown children, Sadie, Justin, and Cole, will live and work at the ranch for one year. If not, the ranch and all of the Boden legacy will be left to a distant relative. Heath had noticed how pretty Sadie was from the very beginning, but he doubted she'd ever noticed him. Now, with him having to enforce her father's wishes, he felt sure he would never find her favor. When he discovers that the avalanche was no accident, Heath vows to protect Sadie and her family at all costs--but will it cost him his heart? Sadie has definitely noticed Heath, and she knows that he is a good, strong man, and also an attractive man. Can she put asides her doubts and let her heart lead the way? A native of southern California, Michelle attended Pomona College, then earned a Masters Degree from the Claremont Graduate University. During her six years as a public high school teacher, she used her summers to travel around the world, and it was her experiences as a volunteer on archaeological digs that inspired her to write historical fiction.

MY REVIEW:  "Wind Chime Cafe"--what a lovely contemporary romance from author Sophie Moss. I was truly captivated by the setting of Heron Island in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. It's one of those places that you want to preserve and protect and then revel in all the charms it has to offer. I became quite involved with the lead characters, Annie, Will, and Annie's adorable daughter Taylor, and I enjoyed the "extra flavor" added to the story line from the entertaining secondary characters. While dealing with PTSD and other very sensitive and compelling issues, the author manages to balance the dramatic elements of the story line with romance and humor--and such delicious food! With beautifully descriptive writing, this well-paced story draws you in, and you will hear the gentle music of the wind chimes as they sway and sparkle in the breeze. Annie Malone makes a bold move toward a brighter future for herself and her young daughter, Taylor, when she purchases a little cafe in downtown Heron Island. While the cafe has a long way to go before it becomes the chic bistro Annie envisions, the promise of an upscale resort coming to the island brings hopes of booming business. The little building on Main Street will be both a home and a source of income. Will Dozier, a native of Heron Island, has managed to stay away from home for the last decade. His career as a Navy Seal has given him a home base in San Diego, California, and he likes it that way. Back on the island to settle his grandparents' estate and find a suitable new owner for the family home and property, he doesn't plan to stay long, but that's before he meets Annie and Taylor. Against his better judgment, he becomes involved with the beautiful single mother and her sweet little girl, and he soon discovers that he and the child share a tragic bond--they both suffer from PTSD. The more time Will spends in his old home place, the more determined he becomes to make sure the property will be sold to the right owner--one who will care for the home and the land as it has been cared for by five generations of Will's family. The trouble is, his place is the prime prize for the developers of the new resort. If Will doesn't sell, the development won't go through, and people like Annie who set their future hopes on the sale will be greatly disappointed. If he does sell, a way of life could be lost forever along with the natural beauty and ambiance of the island life. Will and Annie both have secrets and issues from their past which will come back to haunt them, and the newfound attraction and emotional attachment blooming between them will be put to the test. Is it just need and desire, or is it something much more? No matter what choice Will makes, what does the future hold for Will, Annie, and Taylor? Can Will and Taylor find healing, and can Annie overcome her greatest fear--confronting Taylor's father? Sophie Moss has written a wonderfully romantic tale, and I look forward to more visits to Heron Island. As a bonus, the author has included a recipe for "Della's Sweet Rolls", irresistible confectionary concoctions that tempt the reader throughout the book!
